Thunder Bay & District Annual Crop Tour a Great Success!

IMG_1647This year’s annual crop tour held by the Thunder Bay Agricultural Research Association, as well as the Thunder Bay & District Soil & Crop Improvement Association, was extremely well attended with over 70 people showing up! The tour started at the Thunder Bay Agricultural Research Station, where Dr. Tarlok Sahota led our crowd through the current research trials being done on site. Some of the many highlights of this tour included malting barley, flax, mastergraze corn, canola, grain corn, alfalfa, and galega trials. Following this tour we enjoyed a free lunch sponsored by Samco & Masterfeeds.

Prior to and during lunch, guest speakers were given the opportunity to make presentations. This included Kevin Belluz (NOFIA) providing an update, Racko Singh (In Focus HD) speaking on UAV technology, and Robert Shine (Samco) discussing the benefits of planting corn under plastic. Bruce Forrest & John Hanna were also recognized for many years of IMG_0752service to the TBARA board.

Following these presentations, we held our on farm crop tour, checking out the Jaspers’ flax crop, Bolt’s winter rye, and Ed & Aaron Breukelman’s corn under plastic. All these crops were producing well, thanks to the hard work and innovation of the farmers.

Many thanks go out to the staff of the Thunder Bay Agricultural Research Station, the host farmers of the afternoon tour, the speakers, our lunch sponsors, and the many people who helped organize this event. Looking forward to what cropping research and innovation will do for this region in future years!
